Start with the SEO basics

SEO basics establish which pages matter and whether you can measure their search visibility. Start here before changing individual tags.

Choose the pages and outcomes that matter

Keep the checklist tied to real visitor tasks.

Steps, evidence & next actionHigh · Website owner

Applies to: Public website pages within your authorized scope.
Before you begin: An authorized URL or page sample and a place to keep evidence.

  1. List your main products, services or information tasks.
  2. Choose the pages that should satisfy them and name the action a visitor needs to complete.
PassEach priority task has a real page or a documented content gap.
FailPages have no clear visitor purpose, or the same task is assigned to several interchangeable pages.

If it fails: Clarify the page purpose before commissioning more content.

Retest: Ask someone unfamiliar with the page to identify its purpose and next action.

Not applicable: Use Not applicable only when this task does not apply, and record why.

Priority URL, audience, task and desired action. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

No result recorded yet.

Check your search reporting access

Make account-specific evidence available without guessing.

Steps, evidence & next actionHigh · Website owner

Applies to: Public website pages within your authorized scope.
Before you begin: An authorized URL or page sample and a place to keep evidence.

  1. Open the verified Search Console property for the production site.
  2. Confirm that the URL scope is correct and you can view indexing and performance reports.
PassThe correct property and relevant reports are accessible.
FailYou are using the wrong property; missing access is Blocked, not Fail.

If it fails: Ask the property owner for the minimum access needed.

Retest: Reopen the correct property and the required reports.

Not applicable: Use Not applicable only when this task does not apply, and record why.

Keep in mind: A new property may not yet have useful historical data.

Property scope, available reports and any access blocker. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Save a comparable search baseline

Separate observed search performance from a checklist completion count.

Steps, evidence & next actionMedium · Website owner

Applies to: Public website pages within your authorized scope.
Before you begin: An authorized URL or page sample and a place to keep evidence.

  1. Choose a meaningful date range in the performance report.
  2. Record key page/query results with the same search type, country and device filters for later comparisons.
PassThe baseline includes its dates, filters and source.
FailFigures are recorded without enough context to reproduce them.

If it fails: Save the report context alongside the figures.

Retest: Repeat the same comparison after changes; note seasonality and other concurrent changes.

Not applicable: Use Not applicable only when this task does not apply, and record why.

Keep in mind: A before/after change does not by itself prove what caused the result.

Date range, filters, clicks, impressions and important page/query observations. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Match topics to useful pages

Keyword research connects the language people use with the task your page can actually complete. Search volume alone does not decide whether a page belongs on your site.

Check what searchers are trying to do

Choose a useful page type before writing.

Steps, evidence & next actionHigh · Website owner

Applies to: Public website pages within your authorized scope.
Before you begin: An authorized URL or page sample and a place to keep evidence.

  1. Search your main topic and a few meaningful variants.
  2. Inspect representative results and record whether visitors need a guide, comparison, product, local service or tool.
PassThe intended page can fulfill the observed task and your actual offering.
FailThe page format or promised outcome does not match the visitor task.

If it fails: Adjust the scope or choose a better owner page.

Retest: Compare the revised page with the task, without copying competitor wording.

Not applicable: Use Not applicable only when this task does not apply, and record why.

Keep in mind: Search results are a sample that varies by place, time and personalization.

Query, market, date, inspected URLs and the task you inferred. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Assign one main task to each page

Avoid making near-duplicate pages for wording variations.

Steps, evidence & next actionMedium · Website owner

Applies to: Public website pages within your authorized scope.
Before you begin: An authorized URL or page sample and a place to keep evidence.

  1. Group query variants that need the same answer.
  2. Map each group to one preferred page and identify genuinely different tasks.
PassRelated variants have a clear owner; a separate page has a distinct useful purpose.
FailSeveral pages repeat the same answer without a meaningful difference.

If it fails: Improve or consolidate overlapping content after reviewing existing traffic and links.

Retest: Review the revised page map and contextual links.

Not applicable: Use Not applicable only when this task does not apply, and record why.

Keep in mind: This is an editorial ownership method, not a claim that one query can rank only one URL.

Check access and discovery

Technical SEO checks identify whether important pages can be fetched and whether your indexing signals match your intentions. Use the technical checklist for exact tests.

Retest: Reload the public URL and repeat the response check.

Not applicable: Use Not applicable only when this task does not apply, and record why.

A useful result, every time

Check. Record. Fix. Retest.

This is a manual SEO workflow. It helps you decide what to investigate and keep a usable record. It does not crawl your website or verify your answers automatically.

  1. Choose your scope. Pick the relevant task group and representative pages you are authorized to inspect.
  2. Run the stated check. Read the pass and fail conditions, then record evidence or a reason before choosing a result.
  3. Assign the next action. Add an owner, issue and follow-up date to your notes. Retest after a fix.

What your progress means

Review progress counts passes and failures against applicable checks. Failed work still counts as reviewed. Blocked and untested checks remain unfinished. This is not an SEO score.

Untested
No adequate test has been recorded.
Pass
The stated acceptance condition was observed.
Fail
The acceptance condition was not met.
Blocked
You need access, information or a dependency.
Not applicable
The check does not apply; record your reason.

Export CSV downloads the checks currently shown and your recorded evidence. Print expands the instructions for that view. Saved results stay in this browser; there is no account sync.

How do you use this SEO checklist?

Choose your site stage and task group. Read each test before selecting a status. Record the URL, date and observation in the notes field; keep confidential information out of shared devices. Export a copy before clearing browser data.

  • Untested means there is not enough evidence yet.
  • Pass means the stated condition was observed; Fail means it was not.
  • Blocked means access or a dependency is missing.
  • Not applicable needs a reason.
  • Reviewed progress includes Pass and Fail. It is not an SEO score.

Which SEO checks should come first?

Resolve important public-page access and indexing blockers first. Then work on the pages that matter most to your visitors and business. Treat the priority labels as a starting point, and adjust them using evidence, affected scope and dependencies.

What should a new or small website check first?

Start with accurate pages for your real offering, reliable public access, useful navigation and a way to observe search performance. A small site does not need every advanced technical procedure. Mark genuinely irrelevant checks Not applicable and explain why.

Can you complete the checks with free tools?

Many checks use your browser, Search Console and public testing tools. Account-specific checks require authorized access. This checklist does not require a paid SEO subscription; specialist crawling or reporting needs can depend on your site.

How is this checklist maintained?

The source guidance for this version was reviewed on 7 October 2026. The date records that review, not a test of your website. Update your own evidence after releases, template changes and important new findings. Examples below are illustrations, not customer results.
